For the third straight week the weather was a major worry coming into this weekend’s race in San Diego. Unlike at Anaheim 2 and San Francisco the rain did play a factor in the night's racing. The storm hit Friday night and continued pretty heavily throughout the morning. In the afternoon the skies where looking pretty dark, but they didn’t drop much. The Dirt Wurx crew had the track covered all night and most of the day on Saturday. They pulled the covers off at 4:30pm and started practice _MG_0295at 5:30, just in time for the rain to start to come down. Practice got pretty wet and sloppy, but the rain began to slow down. Before practice started the Dirt Wurx crew mixed some sand into the San Diego soil which really helped the track soak up the rain. By the time it was time to start racing the track was rutted and rough but looking remarkably good.

Heat 1
In the first 250 heat race Phillip Nicoletti jumped out to grab an early lead. Nicoletti put up a good fight, but lost the position to TLD Honda mounted Wil Hahn. Hahn took the lead and checked out to take the heat win. Back in the pack Star Racing’s Broc Tickle got a horrible start having to fight his way through the pack. Tickle put in a strong riding, coming from behind, to finish 5th in the heat.

Here is how they qualified:
1) Wil Hahn
2) Phillip Nicoletti
3) Max Anstie
4) Travis Baker
5) Broc Tickle
6) PJ Larsen
7) Cole Seely
8) Michael Horban
9) Jeff Alessi

Heat 2:
Off the start it was Weimer and Wharton going bar to bar for the holeshot. Weimer took the lead and ran away with it. Late in the heat Josh Hansen was on the gas and all over Wharton for second, but Lil Hanny ran out of time. Trey Canard got a horrific start and had to fight his way into a transfer spot. Canard was able to salvage 7th and avoid going to the LCQ.

Here is how they qualified:
1) Jake Weimer
2) Blake Wharton
3) Josh Hansen
4) Chris Gosselaar
5) Antonio Balbi
6) Eric Mccrummen
7) Trey Canard
8) Josh Clark
9) Robert Clark

LCQ:
Hewitt took the win in the 250 LCQ. However, the race was between Hugo Dagod and Jake Canada, who put on a last lap battle for the final transfer position. Dagod made the final move on Canada in the last turn to take the final transfer spot.

How they qualified:
1) Hunter Hewitt
2) Hugo Dagod

Main:
When the gate dropped for the 250 main it was Trey Canard getting the jump and beating the field to the first turn to take the holeshot. Canard was closely followed by Pro Circuit’s Jake Weimer. Weimer set himself up on the inside of Canard heading down the rhythm section to make the pass on the inside. The two riders went into the corner bar to bar with Weimer on the inside. Canard tried to fight for it and went down while leaning on Weimer. Weimer took the lead and went on to win the race.

Keeping Weimer honest for most of the race was Star Racing’s Max Anstie, who was looking good aboard his Yamaha. Anstie road solid in second for 19 laps until he hit the ground on the last lap and had to settle for a 4th place finish. On a side note both Anstie and Weimer had a lot of trouble getting around a group of lappers, one of which was Jeff Alessi. The Alessi and Anstie camps where pretty fired up at each other. Things got pretty heated after the race between the two camps.

Without a doubt the best race on the track in the 250 class was between Troy Lee Design Honda teammates Cole Seely and Wil Hahn. Both riders where hungry and riding aggressive. They went back and forth a number of times. Coming into the final corner, they were side by side, and Seely just edged out Hahn for the position over the finish. Lucky for them, Anstie’s final lap dirt sample gave both Honda riders a podium position. Weimer topped the podium with Cole Seely taking second and Wil Hahn taking third.

It was good to see PJ Larsen back out on the Superross track. After only getting to ride the KTM for a few days, Larsen looked strong placing 8th in the main.
