Thanksgiving is much more than just a holiday. It is a Christian duty to give thanks. In our flesh we wrestle with things like anxiety, entitlement, unforgiveness, anger, resentment, stinginess, greed, self pity, jealousy, envy, and many more ungodly thoughts and feelings. It is these things that eat away at our souls and prevent Christ from being formed in us. Giving thanks is the antidote to the sin nature. I’ve noticed that it is impossible to be envious and thankful at the same time, so it is also with greed, self pity, jealousy etc. Thankfulness pushes out those sinful thoughts and attitudes. You just can’t have those sins and be thankful.
Thankfulness also opens the door for the Holy Spirit to bear fruit in our lives. Joy, peace, love, steadfastness, self control, generosity, compassion, all of these follow a thankful heart.
Martin Luther said that thankfulness is the “basic Christian attitude.” I think by that he means it’s the foundational attitude. Its that attitude that other Christian attitudes are built upon. Paul said, “No matter what happens, give thanks.” (1 Thessalonians 5.18)
Have a blessed Thanksgiving.
