This weekend, Saturday April 4th, was the first annual Safety Expo Race hosted by
the Brett Downey Safety Foundation at Starwest in Perris, CA. The heart of the event was to raise funds for the BDSF and give companies a chance to display the latest in safety equipment. Companies from SixSixOne, RG3, Leatt, Troy Lee, to Factory Backing were all on hand at vendors row. It was encouraging to see so many industry companies supporting the Foundation and their cause.
As for the race itself, the BDSF did an amazing job and put together a very organized and professional event. The day went off without a hitch and the racing on the track was unbelievable (not to mention with the $20 enter it was also very affordable). This event will no doubt be one to add to your calendars for 2010!
In the Pro Class, Troy Lee riders Jimmy Albertson and Sean Borkenhagen were on
hand. Also showing up in support of the BDSF were top amateur racers Blake Baggett, Travis Baker, and Jake Canada. It was awesome to see Jimmy Albertson back in action and racing again. Jimmy was ripping and just having fun. After racing was over he stated, "Man, I am just having too much fun out there! I just love being out there racing again!" Jimmy's statement pretty much summed up the day of racing. It was a chill, fun, and most importantly, safe day at the race track.
In the intermediate class, Nick Paluzzi was the man to beat. Unfortunately for him he ran into some bike troubles. He was, no doubt, one of the fastest people on the track, but his moto 1 DNF would give the overall to Ranger Laidman. Ranger rode super solid and is making a smooth transition onto the big bike. He is still having a few growing pains, but this kid is someone to keep an eye on. When he gets things figured out on the big bike, watch out!
Hope to see you at the Brett Downey Safety Foundation's Safety Expo Race next year! For more information on the BDSF please visit www.mxsafety38.org
