Hangin Out With: Kevin Johnson

Team Faith rider Kevin Johnson, took some time out of his busy schedule to have a little chat with us to talk about how his season is going so far. Kevin is currently 8th in the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series and is hoping to get back up onto the podium at Tulsa.

PanicREV: Kevin, the last time we saw you was at the US open, how did your off season go?
johnson2Kevin Johnson: I had an OK off season. I did a few FMX shows with Team Faith, which I really like doing. I also did quite a few local races in Texas, Alabama, and Florida. Everything was good till a few weeks before Thanksgiving when I tore my ACL in Florida. I had to take a brake from riding for about four weeks till the bone bruising went away and my knee felt better.

Then in the beginning of December I got my new 2010 yz450 and started riding again. I got about four weeks to get used to it before the first round of AX.

PRev: Coming into the 2010 season what were your expectations?
KJ: I was hoping to come in and be right where I was a few years ago before I had injuries. I planned on some wins and many podiums. I really felt I was riding good, but a little concerned I was not really prepared with the knee injury and getting my bikes late.

PRev: We are six races into the season, how has your season been so far?
KJ: Well, the ministry has been awesome and I am having fun racing and doing the Freestyle show. But, my results have not been where I hoped. The only win I have is a heat race and my best main finish is a 5th. I feel that each weekend I get better and I feel more and more comfortable. So, I hope that I can get up on the podium and move forward in the points. Ultimately our goal on Team Faith is to be an effective ministry that shows Christ love and forgiveness as we get to race some dirt bikes. So, I am happy with this year so far and look forward to the rest of it.

PRev: Do you have any plans on racing any Supercrosses or Nationals this year?
KJ: I want to race the last five Supercross races, but I need help. Team Faith is working with a much smaller budget this year and only able to commit to the AX series expenses for me. I have looked at the expenses for doing the SX rounds and it is not cheap. I need to come up with about $2000.00 just to pay for expenses for me to get to the races, entry fees, and license. That is not including a mechanic, but I will make due with what I can get. I would also love to do some outdoors, but I am not going to commit to the series. I want to be home for the birth of my son in July and not have to leave a race the night before like I did to make the birth of my daughter. Plus, I don't have any money to do them.

PRev: How are your bikes this year are you liking the Kawasaki?
KJ: I am actually back on Yamaha's. I raced the Kawasaki in Canada last summer and us open. I am happy to be back on Yamaha's. My family owns the oldest Yamaha dealership in the country, Bobby J's Yamaha. It is over 50 years old and I am happy to be representing them again. I feel like I am back at home on the Yamaha's and they are awesome this year.

PRev: On to another subject we know that your a Christian and you have a strong walk with the Lord, tell us what you do at a race to spread the Word?johnson
KJ: Team Faith does the Chapel services for Arenacross, GNCCs, Canadian Outdoor Nationals, Dew Tour, and X Games. I am so honored and blessed to be a part of such a great group of people who love the Lord and want to see Christ glorified. As far as what I personally do, I started doing some of the chapels at AX and Canadian Nationals. I actually got ordained this last fall and have performed my first wedding and my first funeral. When I got ordained I thought it was a great honor and I looked forward to doing weddings, but I kind of forgot about the funeral part. It was a hard day, but I am glad that the Lord used me in such a hard time. I truly do enjoy doing the ministry as much as I do racing and hope that the Lord opens the door for me to continue even after my racing days are over.

I am just a dork who has messed up a bunch in his life and know that my only hope is in Christ Jesus. I just want to use the gifts and blessings I have been given to share this joy, peace, and hope that Jesus has given me with the people I get to hang out with.

PRev: Awesome, Kevin thanks. Is there anyone you would like to thank?
KJ: I am so thankful for the great sponsors the Lord has provided to come along side Team Faith and help us do what we have been called us to do!

Fly Racing, WPS, Michelin, Scott, Bobby J's Yamaha, Enzo, Pro Circuit, EVS, Jet Boots, RK, EBC, Tag Metals, Silkolene, UFO, DZ Grafix, Hot Cams, Hot Rods, Pivot Works, Vortex, Athena, K&N, Pilot Travel Centers, and Trinity Racing

PRev: Well good luck at Tulsa Kevin.
KJ: Thanks and God bless!
