FMP:Troy Wong
PanicREV: Tell us a bit about yourself: your name & screen name, your age, family (optional), and where you live.
My real name is Troy, my screen name is Psalm3124. It’s from chapter 31:24 of the book of Psalms (duh). I got married when I was 27 and have been married 17 years. God’s blessed us with four kids. We came to Diamond Bar to start a church and have been there since 1994. My bike number is 343, it’s for Psalm 34.3. That verse was our wedding verse, it’s an invitation to worship.
PREV: What kind of bike or bikes do you ride?
I’ve only got one bike. It’s a 2006 YZ250 smoker. I’ve also got a friend’s 1974 XR75 sitting in my shed. It’s in prime condition.
PREV: What style of riding do you prefer?
Goon is the only style I know.
PREV: Like me, you had knee surgery this year. How's that coming along for you?
God blessed me big time. I had some friends praying that this would be the doc’s best surgery ever. He’s already a good doc (Chief of SportsMedicine Surgery at UCLA), and he said this exceeded his expectations. I’m cleared to do whatever I want. My physical therapist is impressed with my response to therapy. So big props to God.
PREV: Right here I'd normally ask "How did you find out PanicRev Ministries?" But if I'm correct, you were one of the original members. Is this true?
Yeah, Scott and I were PMing each other one nite through a local site called ProRide. We were sharing our hearts for the Lord and our desire to witness to the MX community. We decided to pray about starting an outreach ministry. After a week or two, we both came back and felt like God was saying, “Give it a try.” So we did. John joined very early on. About a year or two into it, I started playing a lesser role and Scott took a greater role. Now, Scott, John, and Jeff do a killer job shepherding the ministry.
PREV: Knowing just a bit of your background, Explain please what you might tell someone who'd ask what it means to be a Christian?
For the longest time I thought a Christian was someone who went to church. Then I thought a Christian was someone who said a prayer to ask Jesus into their heart. Now I understand that a Christian is someone who believes that Jesus forgives them of their sin because of what He did on the cross. And in response to that forgiveness, a Christian loves Jesus and wants to be with Him, honor Him, and make Him the hero of their story.
PREV: Do you have a favorite Bible verse? If so, why that one?
I don’t have a favorite verse, but this is the verse that I’ve prayed the most since becoming Christian.
1 Kings 3.9 - "So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?"
I ask God to give me wisdom to lead my wife, my kids, & the church I serve.
PREV: Please correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you or are you now involved with attempting to seed a new church?
I love church planting. God used me the plant the church I pastor (Gateway), then four years into it, God used Gateway to plant another church (Epic). If the Lord is gracious enough, PanicRev will become a church.
PREV: What do you use to inspire you when you write your "Pit Pastor" column?
I just sit down and think about what I’m going through. Then I ask the Lord what He would have me write about. I’m glad Scott’s given me that creative outlet. I plan on someday taking a writing class.
PREV: Any shout-outs?
The wife. I’m crazy in love with her. She lets me ride.
The oldest kid: He amazes me.
The girl: She knows the Lord deeply.
The jock kid: He’s growing into a leader
The Doogal: I just like him.
Jesus: Saved me from myself. I can hardly wait to see Him.
