Hangin Out With: Sarah Whitmore

A few weeks back we had the opportunity to sit down with KTM rider and WMA Pro Sarah Whitmore.

PanicREV: Four rounds into the series you are sitting inside the top ten in points. Take us through the first few rounds.
Sarah Whitmore: Well things haven't gone as well as I had hoped this year. I have had a lot of crashes, almost every moto. I am just struggling with a lot of things.

PRev: High Point was the half way point for the eight round woman's series. What are you hoping for going into the second half of the series?

SW: I am hoping/expecting to be back where I belong at the last rounds. The first half has been a struggle, but I am making a lot of adjustments and hope the rest of the season will go better.

PRev: Your KTM ride kinda came through at the last second. How is it being on anew team, and new bike?
SW: I was so lucky to end up with KTM. They have taken great care of me and given me more support than I have ever had before. However, because of signing so late, I haven't had as much time on the bike as I needed. Most everyone has been riding their bikes since last fall. I got my bike right before the season started. We are still testing during motos so we are without a doubt are behind the 8 ball.

PRev: What is your take on the series this year in comparison to previous years?
SW: It's so great to be getting more respect this year. To get the TV coverage and to be on pro day as part of the program. Longer motos would be nice though.

PRev: If you don't mind, share a little bit about your walk with the Lord.
SW: My parents raised me as a Christian, it was all I have ever known. But I feel my faith growing each year as I see God working in my life. When FCA asked me to be a part of their camps back in 2006 I was honored. FCA is amazing, it's a motocross church camp and I have gone every year to instruct little kids how to ride as well as help with bible study at night and just be a good example for them. I live right in the dorms with them, eat with them, swim with them, and I love it. It's funny because sometimes its' hard to see how much good one can do by riding dirt bikes. It seems kind of pointless sometimes in the big picture. But then I go to camp and can see how much of an influence the pro riders have over younger riders and I know that what I am doing means something. If I can show them the love of God, then I am doing my job.

PRev: What has been the hardest part of being a Christian in the motocross industry?
SW: Well there are times when your friends are doing things you know are wrong and you want to join, typical peer pressure. But I think the hardest part of being a Christian in general is people actually looking for me to mess up. They think that Christians are perfect or are supposed to be perfect. They don't understand we try our best, but mess up all the time too. It's like non Christians get some kind of victory out of seeing us stumble. That's always hard but I know I have God's forgiveness...

PRev: What is it about the sport that really drives you?
SW: I am so competitive. I hate losing in anything I do, but motocross is really the only thing I am good at. It's the only thing that I have ever wanted to be good at. Everything else seems get boring right away but riding my bikeis always exciting and new. I am more addicted to riding than chocolate and I LOVE chocolate!!! [LAUGHTER]
