San Diego City Fest: The Joy of Service

The Joy of Service

This weekend we had the fortunate opportunity to head down to San Diego for City Fest, a huge outreach and Christian festival. I do not know the exact number that turned out for the event, but we know they were expecting around 200,000 people. San Diego's Mission Bay Park was jammed packed and God's Spirit moved in a huge way.

city_festWe headed down to the event with Dan McGranahan and the boys from Riders For Christ. RIVC locked arms with King of Kings Skate Ministry, Stunt Dudes, and a number of other partners in the Livin It Alliance to put on a action sports outreach within the City Fest event. It is so awesome to see God moving in action sports in such a huge way. It is equally amazing to see God use top action sports athletes like Brian Sumner, Elijah Moore, Matt Beacham, Vic Murphy, Kyle Loza, Greg Hartman, Jimmie Mcguire, Dan Norris, and Jef Groff.

In addition to the athletes God used everyone at the event in a huge way! From the event planners, to the people setting up, to the speakers, and even the crowd God used people to be His hands and feet and share his love and grace this weekend at City Fest. One gentleman that was in the crowd stated:

The speaker was sharing the gospel message when I saw a young boy listening intently. I could just tell that God was moving in the kid’s life when another man stood in front of the boy flicking this bottle up and down. The guy was a total distraction and the boy’s attention had gone from the message to this bottle being tossed up and down. The man saw the boy looking and began to extend his arm to give the boy the bottle to play with. I knew that God wanted this kid’s undivided attention and Satan wanted nothing more than to be a distraction. I walked behind the kid and gently guided him away from this man with the bottle. His attention was once again on what was being said and his eyes were on Jesus. When the time came to respond, he eagerly went forward and asked Christ into his life!

This boy was moved by God’s Spirit and touched by Christ's sacrifice and made the most important decision of his life! God used a man in the crowed that was attentive to the Spirit's prompting to help remove distraction and help keep a person's eyes on Christ. God used a countless number of people to do an amazing work this weekend in San Diego.

In the Bible one illustration Paul uses to describe the church is, "Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us" (Romans 12:4, 5). It was amazing to be a part of this verse coming alive this weekend! Everyone from the athletes to the people setting up and tearing down made a huge investment towards the Kingdom of God by devoting their talents, their time, their sweat, and themselves to what God was doing through the event. God touched the lives of so many; thousands of people came forward and made commitments to follow Christ this weekend at City Fest. It was an amazing movement of God. It was amazing to see His church unit, as one body with many members, serve and make an eternal investment in God's Kingdom. For us, it was truly a joy to serve, to be used, and to be part of something amazing that God did!

Be encouraged, God is calling you to serve him and make an impact for eternity is someone's life. It may be as a evangelist, it may be as a teacher, it may be as a pro athlete, or he may be standing in a crowd worshiping, listening, being led by the Spirit. I don't know how God is going to use you, I just know that if you are a servant of Christ He is going to use you in bold ways. Take a step of faith and pray God uses you in some big way, even today!

"Take a good look, friends, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don't see many of 'the brightest and the best' among you, not many influential, not many from high-society families. Isn't it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses, chose these 'nobodies' to expose the hollow pretensions of the 'somebodies'? That makes it quite clear that none of you can get by with blowing your own horn before God. Everything that we have—right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start—comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. That's why we have the saying, 'If you're going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God'" (1 Corinthians 1:25-17, The Message Bible).

Blow a trumpet for God and serve Him in all that you do!
