Why I Don't Vote Pro-Life

Let me start by saying, I am staunchly pro-life. I believe life begins at conception and I believe abortion is murder. I believe legalized and socially acceptable abortion opens the door to increased child abuse, elder abuse, spousal abuse and euthanasia. I also believe God's judgment falls on societies that legalize abortion.

With all of that, I still don't vote pro-life. No single issue, even one as fundamental as being pro-life makes a person a good mayor, congressperson, judge or president. However, one single issue can disqualify a person from public office. For example, any candidate who said that black people can't work for the government would be disqualified. Or a candidate who endorses corporate corruption would be disqualified. Or a person who would remove a woman's right to vote because of his belief that her intellect is inferior would be disqualified. For any one of these single issues a person would immediately be disqualified for public office.

In the same way, when I was looking for a wife, no one quality would make a good wife. However, one single quality would disqualify a woman from being my wife. For example, her not wanting to do triathlons would not disqualify her, but her not letting me do triathlons would. Her not knowing the Bible well wouldn't disqualify her, her not knowing Jesus would. Her not being the most beautiful girl in the world wouldn't disqualify her, her looking like my dog's butt would.

So it is with the way I vote. Just because someone is pro-life does not guarantee they will get my vote -- I need to see more than just that. However, if a person is pro-choice, they are immediately disqualified in my mind.

In this Presidential election there is one candidate who is staunchly pro-choice and will almost certainly appoint judges to the Supreme Court who are pro-choice. There is another candidate, who is pro-life and will possibly appoint pro-life judges to the Supreme Court. In my mind, the pro-choice candidate is disqualified from public office.

If this column made you think and you enjoyed, it was inspired by  A Godward Life, Book I: Savoring the Supremacy of God in All of Life by John Piper. If you found it dumb and stupid, I'll take credit for that one.

Blessings,
Troy
